Marine and coastal ecosystems are central to the Maldives’ social wellbeing and economic prosperity. With it’s 1,192 islands, the Maldives is one of the most spatially dispersed countries on Earth but these distances can make sustainable management and difficult.
Pilot Ocean Accounts were developed for Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives to understand how seagrass meadows, mangroves and marine ecosystems support tourism, fisheries and coastal protection.
